A clean and unclogged sink in Vancouver

How to Prevent Clogging in Your Kitchen Sink

A clogged kitchen sink prevents water from draining properly and can eventually cause water to travel backwards and bubble up in your sink. Not only will this prevent you from using your kitchen sink, but you may also have to call in a plumber to rectify the situation. In order to keep your kitchen sink draining smoothly, it’s important you take the following preventative measures.

Don’t Dump Coffee Grounds in the Sink

People often toss coffee grounds down the drain after brewing their morning caffeine fix, unaware that they’re greatly increasing the likelihood of clogging their sink. Instead, you should throw coffee grounds into the garbage, or better yet, add them to your compost.

Keep Grease Away from the Drain

Cooking grease is one of the worst things for your drains. Oil buildup is frequently the cause of clogged kitchen sinks, so instead of dumping residue grease into the sink after cooking, collect it in a container that you were planning on throwing out anyways. Then, you can put the whole thing in the trash.

Use a Drain Strainer

To avoid pieces of food making their way into your kitchen drain when cooking or doing dishes, it’s recommended that you use a drain strainer. These can be bought at most hardware stores and come in various shapes, sizes and styles. If you’re unsure which type is best for your particular fixture, take a picture of your sink and show it to an employee at the store to get their advice.

Rinse with Vinegar

Despite your best efforts, sometimes food or oil will end up going down the drain. That’s why it’s a good idea to give your sink a rinse every now and then. This can be done by pouring a cup of vinegar down the drain and allowing it to soak for half an hour. Afterwards, let the hot water run for a few minutes. This works to clean out any accumulated residue that threatens to cause a blockage.
